5 After Care Tips for your Dental Implants

January 28, 2019

It is very important that you practice proper oral hygiene habits before, during and after getting dental implants for healthy results and optimal healing. Here at Smiles of Chandler, conveniently located in the heart of Chandler AZ, we specialize in dental implants and educating our patients in how to properly take care of them. If proper care is not taken there are chances of plaque build-up around the dental implant, causing bleeding gums, gum disease, bone loss, infection and other dental problems which can limit the healing process.

5 Tips to Care for Your Dental Implants

At Smile of Chandler, we provide all our patients with extensive post-op instructions to take care of their dental implants. After care tips can be very helpful to make sure your new smile remains healthy and radiant for years to come.

Brush Thoroughly

We recommend the use of soft brush which is specially designed for dental implants patients and clean hard-to-reach areas. Make sure the bristles are soft so that it can gently clean the surface of your implant. Brushing 2 to 3 minutes is ideal to remove any plaque that may have formed.

Floss Regularly

Flossing your teeth can remove any plaque that remains or that are stuck in-between your teeth. Hence it is recommended that you floss at least once a day so there are no food particles or plaque which can cause all sorts of issues. Make sure to floss gently so that there is no tooth, implant or gum damage.

Avoid Sticky or Hard Foods

Eating hard foods can result in damage to implants as well or potentially even to opposing teeth. Avoid eating hard and sticky foods as it can make your dental implant structure weaker. Some of the foods include caramel, ice, hard candy, dry fruit, etc.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking can be very detrimental to the health of dental implants, specifically in the first 6 months as it is healing but also after the implant is fully integrated. Smoking reduced the blood supply to our gums and teeth and bone and this is can be very detrimental to dental implants. Drinking too much alcohol has also been shown to slow the healing process of dental implants.

Regular Dental Visits

Visit your dentist regularly, at Smiles of Chandler here in Chandler AZ, we recommend at least twice a year depending on your overall oral health. Your regular visit can help the dentist maintain the health of dental implant and your overall oral health. We expect dental implants to last a life time and with proper care we believe that they can. Please contact us if you have any questions about maintaining your dental implants long term.

Our Reviews

Dr Heaton is as kind as he is competent. He treats me like a person, not a paycheck and I feel like I can trust him to only recommend what I need. I also referred an employee of mine who needed serious dental care and did not have a lot of money. Dr Heaton was flexible and kind and so helpful. Highly Recommend.

Most people dread going to the dentist but I'm always excited to go especially when it means seeing all of the wonderful people who work there. My family has been going here for more than 20 years and I've never had a bad experience. You can count on walking out the door with a huge (minty fresh) smile on your face. Highly recommended!
